Gun-deer season less than a week away

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Don Midlikowski has been a hunter for more than four decades.

"It's kind of exciting, you're kind of prepping yourself all year long," said Midlikowski.

And the long wait ends this Saturday.

"Friday night is usually the one where you can't sleep. You're anticipating things so it's kind of exciting, always has been," said Midlikowski.

But he said once he is in the woods safety comes first.

"Accidents can happen and as soon as you stop thinking about safety that's when something is always going to happen. So, you always have to think am I safe doing what I'm doing", Midlikowski added.

That's why authorities are encouraging people not only to remember basic hunting safety when heading outside, but also heater safety to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Of course carbon monoxide is odorless, and that's where the danger comes in," said Rich Maier with the Weston Fire Department. He said before the season starts, hunters should have their heaters inspected.

"This time of the year, where you have hunters going up to cabins and their starting up stoves and their closed pretty tight. They don't check the exhaust parts and make sure they're not plugged maybe from the animals over the summer time," added Maier.

Midlikowski said it can be too easy to get caught up in the excitement of the season.

"You're thinking about hunting, you're looking for deer, you're not thinking about the heater that you just turned on," Midlikowski said.

As the countdown continues, he said he is getting everything set to go for a safe, and successful season.

"You always hope that you'll see a big buck. You know, that's nice," said Midlikowski.
