SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- Sheboygan Mayor Bob Ryan is formally contesting the effort to recall him, challenging the recall group's reasons for removing him from office.
City Clerk Sue Richards tells the Sheboygan Press that Ryan had a Friday deadline to challenge the recall petition -- and he did.
She says the mayor is contesting the reason why the group wants to recall him, which is "to preserve the integrity of (the) mayor's office of Sheboygan."
Richards said the recall group, headed by Alderman Kevin MatiChek, has until 5 p.m. Wednesday to formally rebut Ryan's challenge.
The recall effort came several weeks after Ryan, an admitted alcoholic, passed out in a tavern and got in an altercation that attracted the police.
