WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - Wisconsin Rapids is headed to the Division 1 state title game on Friday. The Red Raiders' staunch defense is led by linebacker Vince Biegel, the state's defensive player of the year. Biegel is headed to Madison not only on Friday, when Rapids will face Kenosha Bradford, but also this fall when he'll suit up for the Badgers as a four-star linebacker recruit.
"He's been a great leader for us," says Raiders coach Tony Biolo. "People who've come to our game have seen him play to that level week in and week out."
The 6'3", 215-pounder runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds and bench presses nearly three hundred pounds. He has 17 sacks this season and close to 100 solo tackles.
"His mentality is the mentality of this football team," says Biolo. "Just a mentally tough, hardworking kid. Does everything you ask him to do, in the offseason just constantly in the weight room making himself better."
Vince has quite the football bloodlines. His little brother, Hayden, joins him on this year's all-state team. His father, Rocky, played football at BYU. And his grandfather, Ken, coached the Rapids team that made the state title game in 1980.
"My grandfather, if he's told me anything, it's to take this all in stride," says Biegel. "Just remember these moments because they're going by quickly."
The Red Raiders are a win away from their first state title. If they do win, it will truly be memorable.
