TOWN OF MEDFORD, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities in north-central Wisconsin say a backyard fire spread to a garage and eventually to the house, killing an 82-year-old man and his 55-year-old wife.
The Taylor County sheriff's office says the fire was reported Friday just before 6 p.m. Investigators say someone had been burning a garbage pile behind the garage and the flames grew out of control.
Deputies arrived to find the garage fully engulfed and flames spreading to the house.
Authorities say 82-year-old Eric M. Motte and his wife had been in the house and weren't able to get out. Motte was declared dead at the scene, and 55-year-old Marie Motte died of her injuries Saturday morning after being airlifted to a hospital.
