Republicans sue to put recalls in new districts

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A group of Republicans is asking the state Supreme Court to require any recall elections for state legislators to be conducted in new districts, a move that would favor their party.

The Journal Sentinel reports one of the chief arguments made in the lawsuit filed Monday is that challenges to legislative maps should generally be heard in state, not federal, courts.

On Friday, a group of Democrats asked a panel of three federal judges to ensure that any recall elections use the old maps.

The Republicans who control the Legislature drew new district maps this year to account for changes in population, but the maps were not to take effect for elections until November 2012.

But now Democrats are trying to recall four Republican state senators, and Republicans want any recall elections to be held in the new districts, which would help protect their 17-16 Senate majority.
