UPDATE: Drunken driver calls 911 on himself

MERRILL (WAOW) -- Lincoln County 911 operators received an unexpected call Sunday night. A man called to say there was an impaired driver on the road. But the man, 21-year-old Cody Schwoch, was calling to report himself.

Driver: "I've been driving. I've been drinking. I just kind of want to turn myself in."

911 Operator: "Were you just driving now?"

Driver: "No, I just parked myself but I've been trying to figure out how to call the police department and not 911."

Authorities said even though the call was unusual, it's not unheard of.

"We had one instance maybe a year ago when a female caller called herself in but it certainly doesn't happen a lot," said Lincoln County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Tom Fischer.

Fischer said Schwoch even called twice that night, once a little before 9 PM and then again a little later.

"He called back and was still trying to get ahold of the Merrill Police Department and then our dispatcher stayed on the line with him until we were able to get police officers on scene with him," said Lt. Fischer.

911 Operator: "You're coming over the bridge right now?"

Driver: "Yup. And I'm coming up to Holiday gas station and that's where I'm going to park and that's where I'm going to stay."

No one was hurt, but officers said it's a good warning for all drivers.

"I don't care if you're 21 or 71," said Lt. Fischer. "People that are drinking oftentimes think they didn't have too much to prohibit me from driving and they drive and that's how they get arrested. That's how car crashes happen."

Newsline 9 tried to get ahold of Schwoch but weren't able to reach him for comment. Police gave him a citation for his first OWI offense. That does not count as a criminal charge in the state, but authorities said he will still need to appear in court.
