Gingrich risk: Will the GOP cast its lot with him?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Being a conventional Republican has never been Newt Gingrich's style.
The former House speaker clearly doesn't see it as the way to beat Mitt Romney in the presidential nominating contest.
Gingrich is sticking to his call for lenience for some illegal immigrants. Romney and others call that amnesty.
But there's a broader debate within Republican circles. Party loyalists must decide if they want to cast their fate with a thrice-married, 68-year-old veteran of Washington's inside games who left Congress with dismal approval ratings.
