LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- An 81-year-old La Crosse woman just found out something that likely made her holidays a little brighter.
She received nearly $244,000 in unclaimed money from the state this week.
State treasury spokesman Ron Giordan says the treasury office contacted her because it was such a large amount.
The La Crosse Tribune reports the woman didn't realize her husband owned a number of municipal bonds, which went to the state after his death.
The woman declined to comment.
Giordan says the state currently has about $403 million in unclaimed assets, but most of those are smaller claims.
