Barge runs aground in Lake Michigan near Sheboygan
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says a barge has run aground in Lake Michigan near Sheboygan.
A WLUK-TV report says authorities believe the barge is carrying a cargo of rocks. There are no immediate reports of pollution or environmental threats.
Coast Guard officials say the barge was being towed to Manitowoc on Thursday as part of routine transit. The barge broke away, and the tugboat's crew was unable to regain control in the rough seas and heavy winds.
Coast Guard investigators were on the scene Friday. They'll monitor the situation until the barge can be re-floated and examined.
