Walker has no immediate plans to grant pardons

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker hasn't granted any pardons since taking office, and his office says he has no immediate plans to do so.

Recent governors from both parties have pardoned hundreds of convicted people. But Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie tells The Post-Crescent of Appleton (http://post.cr/tvMucC ) the Republican governor doesn't plan to do so.

Werwie says Walker believes those decisions are best left up to the courts.

Walker's website still includes pardon application materials, and in March he signed an executive order allowing him to create a pardoning board. Werwie says that's so the option would be available.

Supporters of the process say it allows for the correction of injustices or to address unintended consequences of convictions.

Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle issued 177 pardons in 2010, his last year in office.
