ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Officials at Arlington National Cemetery are breaking ground on a new columbarium that's expected to hold the cremated remains of more than 20,000 people.

The cemetery projects that the new columbarium will allow the cemetery to accommodate cremated remains until 2024.

Groundbreaking on what has been designated as Columbarium Court No. 9 is scheduled for Wednesday morning. Construction will begin in January and is expected to take about 18 months.

More than 300,000 people are interred or inurned at Arlington.
