SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- The Sheboygan city clerk says there are enough signatures to force a recall election of Mayor Bob Ryan.
A group seeking to recall Ryan submitted 4,723 signatures Nov. 1. State law gave Clerk Sue Richards until 5 p.m. Thursday to examine them and make a ruling.
The group needed 4,121 signatures to force an election. The Sheboygan Press (http://shebpr.es/tSD7PL) reports Richards ruled Wednesday that the signatures are valid and sufficient.
Richards' report will be submitted to the Common Council during at its meeting next Monday. The council will order the recall election for Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Ryan has had several instances of public drunkenness. The mayor acknowledges that he's an alcoholic, but says he's recovering.
