UPDATE: Former police officer DeRosier has until October to appeal

RHINELANDER (WAOW) --  A former Rhinelander police officer has been found guilty of sexual assault. The jury handed that verdict to Greg DeRosier late this afternoon -- after deliberating for 14 hours.

As the verdict was read sobs came from the courtroom.

DeRosier was found guilty on felony charges of sexual assault and intimidating a witness.

"There was a lot of evidence that was presented, a lot of testimony, a number of charges..so there was a bunch of information to go through. But, I believe justice was done," Karie Cattanach, Assistant Attorney General said.

DeRoiser was charged with beating a woman, and then raping her. The victim testified that DeRosier threatened her and told her she could not go to police.

"Having to relive what happened and tell it to a room of people..it's never easy in a sexual abuse case," Cattanach said.

Defense Attorney Michael Schiek, had no comment. In closing arguments, he told the court the victim was angry with DeRosier, and that's why she went to police claiming abuse.

DeRosier was also found guilty on misdemeanor charges of battery and bail jumping.  His sentencing hearing is set for January 25th at 1:30 p.m. DeRosier could face up to fifty years in prison.
