Bill requires candidates to declare party support

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Candidates running for partisan office in Wisconsin would have to declare their allegiance to the political party they say they are representing under a bill being circulated in the Legislature.

The proposal comes after Republicans ran as Democrats in order to force primary elections in six state Senate recall elections this summer targeting GOP incumbents. None of the fake Democrats won.

But Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he hasn't ruled out running Republicans as Democrats again in recall elections next year. He says it was a successful move that gave incumbents more time to campaign.

The bill requires candidates to say they adhere to the principles of the party they are on the ballot representing. It's being circulated by Democratic state Sen. Spencer Coggs of Milwaukee.
