Gov. Walker launches 3rd TV ad as recall campaign heats up

WAUSAU (WAOW)--As Governor Scott Walker arrived at UW Marathon County on Tuesday for a bill signing, several people who support recalling him stood outside to greet him.

"I heard the governor said he was looking forward to the recall, so I thought some of the volunteers would offer him the opportunity to sign the papers to hasten the recall," said Jeff Johnson, chair of the Marathon County Democratic Party.

Johnson says recall efforts are moving along well.

"We're just making ourselves available in public places, and people are coming to us," said Johnson.

But the governor says he's doing plenty of campaigning himself. He told Newsline 9 he looks at the recall campaign as an opportunity to highlight the ways he balanced the budget, and to look ahead.

"My campaign right now is the campaign to help the people of the state create 250,000 jobs," said Walker.

Walker has also just launched a third television ad, and he promises more of them as he defends his record.

"I think voters will, particularly during the holiday season, find our ads very favorable because they're all positive ads," said Walker. "They're all talking about the benefits and the good things that we brought to the state."\

But recall supporters look to offer a stiff challenge. They haven't yet named a candidate who might face Walker, and a recall election will likely be expensive. But they say it's worth it.

"Democracy is not cheap, and it's well worth the effort," said Johnson.

It's an effort both sides hope will work in their favor.

Democrats have until mid-January to collect more than half a million signatures. If they're verified, that would force a recall election.
