Antigo elementary principal placed on administrative leave

ANTIGO (WAOW) -- An Antigo elementary school principal has been placed on administrative leave, raising questions among parents in the community. John Lund, who is the principal at West and Pleasant View Elementary schools has been on administrative leave since last week. School officials won't say why, but they said they have been contacted by local police about Lund.

"The district was advised that there were some circumstances that needed to be looked into," said Dean Dietrich, who is the legal counsel for the Antigo School District. "As a result, the district placed this employee on administrative leave."

School officials won't say why -- only that they spoke with police about Lund.

"I know that there have been conversations between the school district officials and law enforcement authorities, but that's the extent of what I can say," said Dietrich.

Some parents of West Elementary students said they know Lund.

"He was always outside in the mornings when they got dropped off," said Harmony Williams, who has three children who go to West Elementary. "They all liked him. I thought he was a great guy."

West students took home a notice on Monday saying an interim principal would be taking over. Some parents said they still have unanswered questions.

"People are just outraged that nobody's telling them anything," said Williams. "Everybody knows what's going on but they're hearing it from kids and rumors."

No criminal charges have been filed against Lund and no other district employees have been place on administrative leave at this time. The Antigo school's legal counsel said it's business as usual at West.

"The Antigo School District is taking all the necessary and appropriate steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all of its students," said Dietrich.

Lund also works as the football coach at Antigo High School. We tried to contact him directly, but were not able to get ahold of him. And again -- at this point, no criminal charges have been filed against Lund. We only know the school district leaders said they've been contacted by authorities.
