Brokaw mill helped shape community

BROKAW (WAOW) -- Area historians said during the past century, the Wausau Paper mill in Brokaw helped shape the community as it is now.

The mill began operations in 1899 and the village of Brokaw was incorporated four years later. Researchers said much of the village's history centers around the mill and the people who kept it running during the past hundred years.

"Most of the people worked at the mill, the ones that grew up in Brokaw," said Marathon County Historical Society researcher Shelley Green. "They worked at the mill and that was their lifeblood."

For many years, historians said the village depended on the mill, its company store and the land Wausau Paper purchased around the area. Green said she doesn't think the closing will hurt the village now as much as it would have back then.
