Wisconsin gets preliminary OK for Medicaid cuts

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state of Wisconsin has received preliminary approval from the federal government for some of the Medicaid cuts expected to result in about 65,000 poor adults and children leaving health insurance programs.

However, the letter sent Friday from the director of the federal Center for Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program Services says more time is needed to analyze the state's plans before making a final determination.

Gov. Scott Walker's administration has said if the plan wasn't approved by Dec. 31, about 53,000 people could be forced off BadgerCare Plus next month.

The letter says a decision by then is unlikely.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services says the letter is being reviewed and next steps are under discussion.
