Police bolster campaign to crack down on drunks

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Police across Wisconsin are cracking down on drunken drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

The special holiday season campaign to cut down on scofflaws began Friday and runs through Dec. 17.

The state Department of Transportation says last December there were nearly 13,000 traffic crashes in the month, more than any other that year. The crashes caused 37 deaths and more than 3,800 injuries.

State Patrol Maj. Sandra Huxtable, director of the DOT's Bureau of Transportation Safety, says slippery roads, poor visibility and hectic holiday traffic combined with impatient and impaired drivers make this time of year especially dangerous.

Last year more than 120,000 people were cited for not wearing their seat belts are required under the law.
