Big Moscow protest rally against vote fraud begins

MOSCOW (AP) -- At least 15,000 people have thronged into a Moscow square to protest against alleged electoral fraud and against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his party.

In an unusual concession to opposition supporters, police gave permission for up to 30,000 demonstrators to attend the rally Saturday on Bolotnaya Square. Police estimated at least 15,000 had gathered by the opening of the rally, and thousands more were marching toward the square from another part of the city.

The Moscow rally is the main event of a day of nationwide protests sparked by widespread reports of fraud in last Sunday's parliamentary election. Demonstrators are demanding a rerun of the election, and freedom for anyone arrested in protests earlier this week.
