AAU starts independent investigation

(AP)-- Acting AAU President Louis Stout says his organization has started an independent internal investigation in response to the "serious allegations" surrounding former president Robert "Bobby" Dodd.

Stout's statement comes one day after ESPN reported on Friday that two former basketball players have accused Dodd of molesting them as children.

Stout says the review "will include outside expert assessments about the safeguards we have in place, and the screening and training we provide to staff and volunteers."

Stout said Saturday: "We are going to enhance any of our policies, procedures and practices -- as recommended by this expert review -- to ensure the safety of all of the young people in our programs."

Stout said Friday the 63-year-old Dodd has colon cancer and will not return to the Amateur Athletic Union.
