Federal appeals court strikes down state law

MADISON (AP) -

A federal appeals court has struck down a Wisconsin law limiting how much any one person can donate to independent political action groups.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday in favor of Wisconsin Right to Life's political action committee, which brought the lawsuit just before recall elections targeting nine state senators in August.

Wisconsin Right to Life won a temporary injunction and a three-judge panel on the appeals court made that permanent Monday saying the state's $10,000 annual limit was an unconstitutional restriction on free speech.

Wisconsin Right to Life's attorney was not immediately available for comment. A spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Justice referred questions to the state board that oversees elections. A spokesman for the Government Accountability Board did not immediately return messages.
