Tips to set your resume a part from the others

WAUSAU (WAOW) --  Sally Olson knows what it feels like to lose a job. After seventeen years at SNE Enterprises, Olson and her husband were let go.

"For us, it was difficult," Olson explained.  She had tough time getting back into the working world after seventeen years doing the same job.

"It was really rough. I had to make a lot of adjustments," Olson said.

So, she decided to go back to school.

"Everything is just so different. The times changed. Trying to get into the computer age has been really hard."

But, one thing that has stood the test of time and is just as crucial as ever is a good resume.  Now, with the announcement of close to 1,000 jobs lost in the Wausau area, the job market is more competitive than ever. Experts say a good resume can set you a part from the rest.

"The employer wants to see it, and we haven't gotten away from resumes. They are the key piece," Resume specialist Julie Walraven said.

Walraven has some tips to move your resume to the top of the pile.

First, experts say to use title and headlines to match the job you want. Next, sell your accomplishments. Experts say do not be afraid to sell yourself.

"In real estate they say location, location, location. In resume building we say accomplishments, accomplishments, accomplishments," Walraven said.

Walraven also says to always have your resume answer the question, "Why should I hire you?"

"Remember who else you know and start talking. Don't hide your job search," Walraven said.

And as for Olson, she didn't let the search get her down. When she sends out her resumes she is confident in the final product.
