Water line break damages Wis. homeless shelter

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- A homeless shelter in Green Bay is dealing with water damage after a broken sprinkler system pumped hundreds of gallons of water into the building over the weekend.

Kris Olson, director of development at the NEW Community Shelter, says the system failed to drain properly. Water froze in the pipes and expanded, breaking off sprinkler heads in the building's attic.

Water poured into the building Sunday, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Flooding destroyed one resident dorm room and a transitional living apartment and damaged the shelter's new computer lab. Olson tells the Green Bay Press-Gazette (http://gbpg.net/uRcRhs) residents in the rooms that were destroyed are doubled-up in other rooms and have lost most of their personal items.

Olson says it could be days before the extent of damage is known.
