WAUSAU (WAOW)-- Village of Weston leaders tell Newsline 9 they received a $600,00 state grant to upgrade bike/pedestrian trails. Mike Wodalski, Village Engineer, says the money will be used to extend the bike trail south of the new Birch Street bike and pedestrian bridge. He adds that the extension will likely move south from Birch Street to Camp Phillips Road.
Right now the new bike and pedestrian bridge remains closed. Village leaders hoped to open it on Tuesday. Wodalski says after inspecting the bridge it was determined that construction crews still needed additional time to clean up and ice had formed on the bridge. Clearing the ice will take some time because Wodalski says they want to avoid using salt on the new concrete, for fear of damaging it.
For now, plans call for the ice clear and clean up to continue. The hope of village leaders is that they can open the bridge to bikes and pedestrians later this week or next week at the latest.
The bridge crossing Highway 29 has a $2 million dollar price tag. It links the south and north sides of Weston.
