Woman pleads guilty to making threat against lawmaker
MADISON (AP) -
A Cross Plains woman accused of threatening Republican legislators has pleaded guilty to making a bomb threat.
A Dane County judge on Thursday placed 27-year-old Katherine R. Windels in a first-offenders program. If she completes the program the charge will be dismissed.
She was accused of emailing Republican state senators in March warning that they'd be shot in the head and that bombs had been planted around their homes and cars. The emails came after lawmakers passed sweeping restrictions on public workers' union rights.
Judge Julie Genovese says Windels had no prior criminal record, and the judge referenced letters from mental-health providers saying Windels suffers from anxiety and depression.
Defense attorney Hal Harlowe says Windels admitted to the threats, which he says doesn't excuse the conduct but minimized the impact.
