Kyrgyz parties form broad-based coalition

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) -- Four parties in Kyrgyzstan have agreed to form a broad coalition government, a development that could create much-needed political stability.

Under an agreement signed Friday, more than three-quarters of the 120 parliament deputies will enter the coalition, which is expected to significantly ease decision-making. The first task will be appointing a prime minister.

The previous government collapsed this month amid disagreement on reforms.

The ex-Soviet republic struggles with hardship exacerbated by corruption and crumbling infrastructure.

Kyrgyzstan hosts a U.S. air base used as a hub for operations in nearby Afghanistan.
