State's largest wind farm in service

PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) -- The turbine blades at the state's largest wind farm are whirling. We Energies said Tuesday the Glacier Hills Wind Park in Columbia County has been placed into commercial service.

The 90 turbines are capable of producing enough energy to power 45,000 homes. More than 350,000 labor hours were spent on construction led by Wisconsin contractors Boldt Construction, Edgerton Contractors and Michels Corporation. The turbine towers were built by Broadwind of Manitowoc.

The wind farm is spread across 17,000 acres of farmland east of Portage.

We Energies says the project will come in below the target of nearly $364 million set by state regulators. We Energies also operates an 88-turbine wind farm in Fond du Lac County.
