Man sentenced to life in murder-for-hire plot

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- A man found guilty of hiring a hit man to kill the mother of his son has been sentenced in Waukesha County to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Darren Wold maintained his innocence during a two-hour sentencing hearing Tuesday. Wold was convicted of hiring Justin Welch to kill his former girlfriend, Kim Smith, for $7,000. Welch and middleman Jack Johnson, were also found guilty in the murder-for-hire plot.

Wold told Judge James Kieffer the truth of the case was ignored. But, the Journal Sentinel ( ) says Kieffer told Wold he was a "cold-blooded killer" who lost it all. Prosecutors say Wold wanted Smith dead because of a custody battle over their young son.
