Mercosur leaders push to bring in Venezuela

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) -- The leaders of South America's Mercosur trade bloc are pushing to bring Venezuela into the group even if that would seem to threaten the group's insistence on consensus.

Uruguayan Foreign minister Luis Almagro says a proposal for full Venezuelan membership was well received by the group's foreign ministers on Tuesday. Venezuelan membership has been stalled so far because critics of Hugo Chavez who dominate Paraguay's legislature have refused to endorse it.

The Mercosur summit also is expected to follow the bloc's recognition of a Palestinian state with a largely symbolic free-trade deal, and to endorse protectionist economic measures.
