Unemployment rates still worst in Racine, Beloit

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The latest unemployment figures show that Racine, Beloit and Milwaukee remain the Wisconsin cities hardest hit by joblessness.

A report released Wednesday by the state Department of Workforce Development says unemployment in Racine was 11.8 percent last month. That's a 0.1 percent improvement from October, but still worst among the 31 municipalities with at least 25,000 residents.

The unemployment rate was 11.2 percent in Beloit and 10.0 percent in Milwaukee.

Caledonia and Madison had the two best rates, at 3.2 percent and 4.4 percent respectively.

The state's overall unemployment rate dropped from 7.7 percent to 7.3 percent. At the same time, the latest jobs report showed a loss of 14,600 jobs last month, including 11,700 in the private sector. The jobs number and unemployment figure are derived from different surveys.
