Maggots used to clean wounds

(CNN) -

A new study shows maggots may be better at cleaning some wounds than conventional methods.

Researchers in France looked at more than 100 patients who had wounds with masses of dead tissue inside.

Half the patients got maggot therapy.

The other half got traditional therapy.

Researchers say those who got the maggot therapy had a lot less dead tissue in their wounds than people treated with conventional methods.

But, they found the maggot therapy was only effective for the first week.

After that, they found using the maggots was no better than other methods.
