Yemen protesters attacked by regime loyalists

SANAA, Yemen (AP) -- Soldiers and other supporters of Yemen's president have attacked anti-government protesters in the capital. A medic says 10 protesters were injured, including one with serious gunshot wounds.

They were gathering to greet a large group of protesters marching to the capital from the city of Taiz, about 44 miles (70 kilometers) to the south. The four-day march is due to reach Sanaa on Saturday.

They are protesting a plan to grant President Ali Abdullah Saleh immunity from prosecution in return for stepping down.

Protester Abdel-Hadi al-Azazi says they were attacked Friday by stick-wielding civilians. Then, troops loyal to Saleh fired at them.

The medic who gave the casualty figure spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to brief journalists.
