40 Milwaukee County deputies get layoff reprieve

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- About 40 sheriff's deputies in Milwaukee County have been ordered to report to work next month after all, after a judge blocked layoffs planned for Dec. 31.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Judge William Pocan issued a temporary injunction that will delay layoffs for at least a month -- until the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission and the county Civil Service Commission hold hearings about the layoff list.

The sheriff's office faces budget cuts in 2012. Some deputies retired, but about 40 were laid off.

The union representing the deputies sued, saying errors were made in those pinpointed for layoffs.

On Friday, Sheriff David Clarke Jr. says he'll abide by the court's ruling, but criticized it and the budget. He says the budget is a "train wreck."
