Clayton shooting suspect goes to court

CLAYTON, Wis. (AP) -- The suspect in a Christmas Eve shooting in the Town of Clayton that left a man critically injured is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.

WBAY-TV reports that a 24-year-old man has admitted to investigators that he shot a 36-year-old man with an automatic rifle at a family gathering.

The Winnebago County sheriff's office reports the suspect was arrested near the crime scene after a manhunt that lasted almost a day. He faces a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Investigators say the suspect had been planning the attack for three months, acquiring an assault rifle well in advance. Authorities say the suspect's mental health may be an issue in the case.

Law enforcement officers responded to the shooting Saturday with SWAT teams and armored vehicles.
