Minocqua couple gives millions to protect cross-country skiing

MINOCQUA (WAOW) -- A Minocqua couple hopes millions of their dollars will help save their favorite vacation spot.

Kenneth and Carolyn Aldridge bought almost 3,200 acres of land last June just west of Minocqua. That land is popular for cross-country skiing. Then the couple donated that land to the state. They say the move helps secure the land and keep it safe, and that they wanted to help preserve the trails.

"We ski and hike and bike here in the Minocqua area but I've been coming here sixty years and my mother has been coming since she was a little girl in the 1920s," said Kenneth Aldridge.

The executive director of the Northwoods Land Trust says this is the biggest donation to any Wisconsin land trust in the state's history. The land will permanently protect more than 20 miles of cross-country ski trails in the Minocqua Winter Park system.

"We're elated. It took us ten years to put this whole package together and it's a dream come true," said David Kozeluh, a member of the board of directors for the Minocqua Winter Park. "It's something that I've wished for for a long, long time."
