Wis. Dems set up own public hearing on mining bill

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Two Democratic legislators are planning to hold their own public hearing on a Republican bill that would rewrite Wisconsin's iron mining statutes.

The measure is designed to jump-start Gogebic Taconite's plans for an iron mine in the Penokee Hills just south of Lake Superior. Republicans held a public hearing on the bill earlier this month in West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb some 300 miles from the mine site. The move drew criticism from environmentalists and other opponents, who accused Republicans of trying to quash complaints from people who would be directly affected by the mine.

State Sen. Bob Jauch of Poplar and Rep. Janet Bewley of Ashland say they'll host their own hearing in Ashland on Jan. 7. They say people in northwestern Wisconsin deserve a chance to speak.
