Puerto Rico approves political status referendum

Posted:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuno has approved a two-part referendum to help decide the island's political status.

The first part would ask voters if they want a change in status or prefer to remain a U.S. commonwealth. The second part asks voters to choose either statehood, independence or sovereign free association.

Fortuno said on Wednesday that any plan aimed at resolving Puerto Rico's political future assumes that the current status no longer has majority support.

Sen. Eduardo Bhatia said holding a two-part referendum on the same day makes no sense because it assumes a losing minority chose to remain a U.S. commonwealth.
