Arab League observers to visit city where 6 deaths reported

Posted:

BEIRUT (AP) -- Monitors from the Arab League have been hearing accounts of the Syrian government's crackdown on dissent in the central city of Homs.

Meanwhile, fresh violence has flared in a nearby city. Activists say troops opened fire today on thousands of unarmed protesters in the city of Hama today, killing at least six. The observers are supposed to visit that city tomorrow.

In the two days since the Arab monitors arrived, activists say Syrian troops have killed at least 39 people.

Critics of Syria's government believe it only allowed the Arab League observers into Syria to buy time and head off more international sanctions.

The monitors are supposed to be making sure the regime is complying with terms of a plan to end the crackdown on dissent.
