Tomahawk man apologizes for ripping out jail fire sprinkler

TOMAHAWK (WAOW) -- A Tomahawk man accused of ripping out a fire sprinkler and setting off alarms at a jail is speaking out about what happened.

Brandon Kallerud, 20, was arrested on Christmas Eve after a disturbance at a home in the Town of Wilson. Sheriff's deputies say Kallerud tore the sprinkler head off shortly after he was placed in a holding cell, causing water to flow and set off the jail's fire alarms.

Kallerud's family reached out to Newsline 9 after this story broke to tell their side of the story. They don't dispute what police say happened. But Brandon Kallerud says he didn't mean to cause chaos at the jail cell. He says he was off his medication and reacted that way because he felt bad about what happened.

"I just want to say I'm sorry for what I did at the jail. I really don't know what I was doing at the time," said Brandon Kallerud.

His mother says she wants people to know her son deals with emotional issues.

"When he is on his medication he is just fine, and I'm sure that there are other people around that have that issue too," said Patti Kallerud. "And just to be put on TV and have people think that, you know, you just want to cause trouble, that's not my son."

Brandon Kallerud faces several charges including battery, disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property, and intentionally sounding a false fire alarm. A court date has not been set yet.
