Perry: Abortion allowed if woman's life at risk

INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry says he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk, seeming to contradict a policy reversal offered a day earlier.

Perry said Wednesday that he opposes abortion but would allow the procedure in that one case.

On Tuesday, he told a pastor he had undergone a change of heart and seemed to say he opposed abortion in all instances, including rape and incest.

Perry tells reporters traveling with his campaign bus that he has struggled with a position on abortion.

In his final week of campaigning before Iowa holds its first caucuses, Perry is playing up his social conservative credentials. But his late shift on abortion is drawing questions about what exactly he believes on the issue many Iowans make their top priority.
