Stevens Point post office could move if lease not renewed

STEVENS POINT (WAOW)-- The Stevens Point post office could be moving soon. City officials say the lease ends Saturday and a new agreement is still up in the air.

According to the US Postal Service, the post office's current location on Main street has been leased to USPS for the last 50 years. That lease ends at the end of the year, and a new lease has not been agreed upon.

Post office officials say the building's owner wants to raise the rent significantly.

City officials said they are already working to keep the office where it is. "Priority number one would be to keep them in their current location and keep them in downtown Stevens Point," said Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson.

He said the current location is convenient and draws people downtown.

"The city's priority of course would be to keep them exactly where they are. If that isn't an option, we very much want to keep them in downtown."

A spokesperson for the US Postal Service said they are in negotiations with the real estate company that leases the building. They hope to reach an agreement by the end of the year.

Officials said if that doesn't happen, they plan to move to a month to month lease until a permanent location can be found. "We want to stay in the location we're in to serve the customers and not have any disruptions and we're hoping that through the negotiations with the landlord we can do that," said USPS Spokesperson Sean Hargadon.

Mayor Halverson said the city has already pinpointed three locations that would meet the needs of the post office should it have to move.

Representatives from the company that leases the building were unavailable for comment. US Postal Service officials said Wisconsin Postal Holdings LLC based in New York City owns the property.
