4 killed as Syrians fire on protesters during visit by Arab League monitors

BEIRUT (AP) -- Activists say at least four people are dead after Syrian security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of people protesting outside a mosque in a suburb of the capital.

They say the shooting took place near a municipal building that was being visited by members of the Arab League delegation that is in Syria to monitor the government's compliance with a plan to end its bloody crackdown on dissent.

Although Syria's government has released about 800 prisoners and removed some tanks from the city of Homs, the military has continued to shoot and kill unarmed protesters.

The continued violence is reinforcing the view of anti-government forces there that Syria's limited cooperation with the Arab League observers is nothing more than an effort by the government to buy time, and head off additional international sanctions.

State-run TV today says the monitors visited the Damascus area, the central city of Hama and the southern province where the uprising against Assad began in March.
