Ski trails dedicated in honor of generous couple

MINOCQUA (WAOW) --  It's for families like the Stelzer's, who travel all the way from Illinois just to ski the slopes at Minocqua Winter Park.

And for people like Bill Kozol, who drives eight hours just for a few runs down the hill.

Its for all the winter enthusiasts that Carolyn and Kenneth Aldridge kept in mind when they made the decision to save the vacation spot they have grown to love.

The Aldridge's bought 32-hundred acres of land and then donated it to the state. Their generous gift permanently protects over 20 miles of cross county skiing and snow shoe trails. Not to mention, 13 miles of rivers, lakes and streams.

"These skiers and all future generations of skiers will continue to use the same trail system," Bryan Pierce, Executive Director at Northwoods Land Trust said.

The land went up for sale in June. Minocqua Winter Park officials say they were worried the trails would close, if someone else bought the property, and turned it into something else.

"It could have gone to anybody. A developments, condos, anything," Pierce said.

That's when the Aldridge's say they knew what they had to do.

"People are celebrating all over and want to thank Carolyn and Ken for their generous gift," Pierce said.

And for the Stelzer's, their home away from home is safe. And their yearly tradition has no end in sight.

"We can carry on the tradition and do it for as long as we want," Sarah Stelzer said.
