Roadside bombs kill 2 NATO soldiers, 4 Afghan civilians

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Two NATO service members have been killed by roadside bombs today in southern Afghanistan.

The deaths bring the December toll for NATO troops killed in Afghanistan to 27, and the total for the year to 543. Last year, more than 700 NATO troops died.

Four Afghan civilians also died today in a roadside bombing 250 miles southwest of Kabul.

And a NATO helicopter made an emergency landing in northern Afghanistan after having mechanical problems. A statement said there was no evidence of enemy ground fire. The crew was unharmed and the chopper was brought back to a coalition base without incident.

Earlier today, NATO said its troops working with Afghan forces killed three senior Taliban figures and captured 11 fighters and sympathizers.

The development came as a senior Obama administration official told The Associated Press that Washington plans to continue a series of secret meetings with Taliban representatives next year aimed at establishing a peace process to bring an end to 10-year war.
