Haiti leader paves way for new elections

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- An adviser to Haitian President Michel Martelly says the leader has begun the process of organizing new legislative and local elections planned for next year.

Presidential adviser Damian Merlo says Martelly did so by issuing a decree that fired members of the nine-person electoral council.

Martelly will now be required to name new members to the provisional electoral council that will oversee next year's elections. The new body will likely be composed of Martelly's allies and will pick the day to vote.

One-third of the 30-member Senate will be up for grabs along with mayoral posts for cities nationwide.

Merlo made the statement Friday.
