Massive Times Square crowd to greet 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hundreds of thousands of people crammed into Times Square are welcoming 2012 in unusually warm weather and tight security.

One celebrator says the weather is "amazing." Another says, "Once the ball drops, I won't give 2011 another thought." At least some of the crowd is decked out in party hats and 2012 glasses.

Revelers gathered to watch the famous ball, decorated with 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles, make its slow drop counting down the seconds to the new year. It's a tradition dating back to 1907.

More than 1,500 police officers are making sure it all goes smoothly and safely. They've set up barricades essentially penning in the crowd along a 17-block area.
