Bail set in officer hit-and-run in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Bail for a 19-year-old man accused of severely injuring a Milwaukee police officer in a hit-and-run has been set at $50,000.

Juan Alvarado is charged with first-degree reckless injury and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Alvarado is accused of driving on the wrong side of the street, jumping a curb and striking 37-year-old Officer Frank Vrtochnick (ver-TAHSH'-nik) as he stood outside his squad car Christmas Day. He then allegedly fled.

Chicago and Milwaukee arrested Alvarado later at a Chicago bus station, where he was allegedly trying to go to Mexico.

The prosecutor said during the hearing Monday that the higher cash bail was justified because Alvarado was a fugitive.

WISN-TV reports ( ) Alvarado is scheduled to return to court Jan. 18 for a preliminary hearing.
