Wis. DOJ won't meet carry deadlines

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Justice Department officials say they're so swamped with concealed carry applications they likely won't be able to meet their deadlines for issuing permits this month.

A new state law allowing concealed weapons went into effect on Nov. 1. The measure gives the Justice Department 45 days to process permit applications received through Nov. 30. Any applications received after that date must be processed within 21 days.

The department's Law Enforcement Services Division Administrator Brian O'Keefe says the agency is so overwhelmed with applications it likely will need a day or two longer to process applications from now through mid-January. The agency has received nearly 65,000 applications so far and has spent nearly $30,000 on overtime for processing.
