Protests resume against Peru gold mining project

CAJAMARCA, Peru (AP) -- Demonstrators in Peru have resumed protests against plans to develop a $4.8 billion gold mine.

About 2,000 Peruvians joined the protest march in northern Cajamarca state. The protesters say they fear the Conga gold-and-silver mine will taint their water and affect a major aquifer.

The mine is majority owned by U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corp.

Cajamarca state Gov. Gregorio Santos helped lead the protest on Monday. He reiterated that the protesters want a new study of the environmental impact of the mine, and are asking the government to facilitate dialogue about the issue.
